Hiland's Weaver named Div. IV POY

From AP and Staff Reports

State tournament-bound stars Tay'ler Mingo, Ashar Harris and Hilary Weaver took the top individual honors on the 2009 Associated Press Div. III and IV girls All-Ohio basketball teams announced Tuesday.

Mingo, who plays for South Euclid Regina, was the player of the year in Div. III after averaging 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 7.2 assists for Regina, which will be on display at this week's state tournament.

Harris and Weaver will play in the Div. IV state Final Four after sharing the player of the year honors. Harris, a 5-11 senior, averaged 16.9 points and 13.9 assists a game for Columbus Africentric. Weaver contributed 11.7 points and 5.9 assists for 25-1 Hiland.

"Wow, I'm very surprised," said Hiland coach Dave Schlabach. "I figured she'd be first or second-team."

This continues a run of Hawks taking the top player honor as they have taken four of the last five POY honors.

"Hilary can score 20 points a night if we need her to," said Schlabach. "She's just a very confident point guard. She has an incredible assist to turnover ratio with a great work ethic." Weaver has dished out 153 assists on the year while only turning the ball over 58 times in 26 games.

The coaches of the year were Denny Meyer of Millbury Lake and Marion Pleasant's Mike Ward in Div. III, and Cuyahoga Heights' Al Martin and Greg Rickard of Convoy Crestview in Div. IV.

Another local player picked up first-team honors as Smithville's Jenna Pew was selected for the Div. III first team.

"She had an outstanding year," said Smithie coach Mike Miller. "She was the only area girl to average over 20 points per game (20.6 ppg) and averaged 10 rebounds per game. She's very deserving of this honor."

Others picking up accolades in Div. III were Orrville's Libby Ladrach, a third-team selection. Ladrach averaged 17.7 points per game and pulled down 10.5 rebounds.

Earning honorable mention status in Div. III were Northwestern Kara Koch (15.0), Norwayne's Molly Hanzie (13.9), Becky Orchard of Loudonville (14.6) and Smithville's Kayla Carver (12.4).

Rittman's Aleysha Gregory (14.1) was a special mention recipient in Div. IV, with Hiland's Katelyn Stuckey (10.0) and Karli Mast (15.0) and Dalton's Karissa Eckinger (9.6) picking up honorable mention status in Div. IV.
